Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy

Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) was originated by Albert Ellis, Ph.D. in the mid-1950's. Unlike most Cognitive Therapies which attempt to modify a client's dysfunctional congition processes, REBT is founded on a more philosophical approach( Ellis, 1993) In a nutshell, REBT focuses on helping people discover their dysfunctional irrational beliefs that guide their behavior and attempts to replace them with rational thoughts.

A guide for dummies.... final part! ( part 3)

9) Dispute Irrational Beliefs

- Reveal to client that his irrational belief is actually hindrance to his progress

- Various disputing styles towards irrational beliefs:

* Socratic: Worker to ask illogical and empirically inconsistent questions on the client’s irrational belief; so that he would not merely accept the worker’s ideas without developing his own thoughts.

*Didactic: Worker to give knowledgeable information to client regarding the drawback of irrational beliefs

*Humorous: Worker to use this only after establishing a strong rapport with the client.

*Self-disclosing: Worker sharing personal experience like what the client is undergoing, state the process undertaken; and the problem was gone as you change the irrational belief in you.

10) Prepare client to deepen conviction in Rational Beliefs

11) Encourage client to put new learning into practice

- giving homework assignments to client in order for him to practice adopting rational beliefs

12) Check homework Assignments

13) Facilitate the Working-through Process

- Worker encourages client to always try out methods that could help him in fighting his irrational belief, at the same time strengthening his rational belief.

- Advice him that there will be adversities along the way, and provide him with several scenarios of setbacks to prepare him

5) Identify & Assess any secondary emotional problems

- Always check with your client if she has an underlying problem from the one that has been identified. An example would be to question, “How do you feel about feeling scared?” The primary problem here is about the client feeling scared, however if he discloses any other feelings, then that is considered as secondary problem.

6) Teach the B – C Connection

- Need to clarify with client that the reason for his C is due to his irrational belief (B), or else he would not understand the being of the next stage.

7) Assess Belief

- To assess client’s irrational beliefs

- Always look out for:

* Premise
à Dogmatic Musts
à Absolute Shoulds
à Have to’s
à Oughts

* 4 Main Derivatives
à Awfulizing
à I-can’t-stand-it-itis
à Damnation
à Always-and-never thinking
8) Connect Irrational Beliefs & C

8) Connect Irrational Beliefs & C

- Here, worker has to make sure that the client understands that his C is derived from the irrational beliefs he has been holding

A quick guide for dummies in REBT.. ( part 1)

Hello once again...

Some of you may still be feeling quite confused after reading the notes on the website ( or perhaps you have gotten tired of reading too many words =x)... so here's a brief, 13-step process to using REBT with your prospective clients!

[disclaimer: While we provide this 'quick-referencing' for REBT, we encourage all students of social work to read widely and critically for elaborations on techniques used in this counselling theory to get a better understanding and feel of the theory.

Also, do be cautious in the usage of these techniques while dealing with clients. Weinrach (1990) has indicated that REBT has the capability of rubbing individuals the wrong way. Also, The kind of conceptual disputing favoured by REBT could easily meander off track into minutiae relatively far removed from the client's central concern ]

A quick-fix for the day. yAy! ;)

A 13-step process in approaching REBT

1) Ask for a Problem

- Pertinent to ask client for the problem he wishes to address, to show that worker is committed into the problem-solving orientation

- 2 strategies in acquiring Target Problem:

* A - enquire what the problem is

And if Client identify non-major problem?
* B – the follow up question is to ask the client what is really bothering him

If Client fail to identify Target Problem?
* Ask what the client aim to achieve from the therapy.

2) Define & Agree upon the Target Problem

- Need to distinguish between Emotional problem & Practical difficulties (e.g. unemployment)
à REBT focuses on creating change to the emotional aspect, after which the emotional change would result into positive outlook and strength to solve the practical difficulties.

- Vague problems by client should always be explained and clarified in order for the worker to understand the client better.

- Make clear to client that change is needed not to A, but to C

3) Assess C

*Help assess the consequences of the inappropriate negative emotion – what is her reaction when she is facing it? Self- defeatingly or constructively?

* Constantly point out the objective is to replace the inappropriate emotion with the appropriate ones.

* Help her to adapt to the situation if she is to experience appropriate emotion, because it would be her first time to experience that kind of emotion after so long.

4) Assess A

- Find a specific activating event A, which could lead to client’s irrational B – what really makes the client feels anxious, and assess his reaction at C

* Encourage client to always be clear while describing A

* Encourage client to discuss one A at time

Greetings!

Dear students of social work,

We hope that you've grasped some of the main concepts of REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therpy ) from our website and role play on the short video clip .
This blog is specially created for students like yourself and for us to engage in an online- discussion regarding the use of REBT as a counselling concept for clients. Now and then as the group ( and even yourself ) goes about doing research on REBT, we will be posting some comments from various websites which postulate for and against the usage of this theory to help to-be social workers like you decide whether you would like to use this form of counselling for a certain group of clientile.

It is our group's desire that this blog will be a platform for a creative and fun learning process for all students of social work.

Should you have any queries, do post your comments online! =)
